What is the 'Stoppelmarkt'? It is one of the biggest fairs in north Germany
and takes place in Vechta every year. About 1,800 applications for licensed
sites at the Stoppelmarkt are received by the town council every year. Consequently,
Vechta is able to choose the best and most attractive rides and side-shows available
so that visitors can really enjoy themselves.
What's on at the Stoppelmarkt?
Everything begins on Thursday, 12th August 2004 at five o'clock in the evening
with a big parade of colourful floats, music bands and groups representing different
clubs, schools, activities and the like. The parade starts off in the town centre
and follows a set route to the Stoppelmarkt area. It is carnival time in Vechta!
The Stoppelmarkt is officially declared open by the mayor at around seven o'clock.
The mayor delivers his speech standing at the 'Amtmannsbult' which was the site
of the fair courts in days gone by. When this ceremony is over, the fun can
begin in earnest!
At ten o'clock on Sunday, 17th August 2003 the Stoppelmarkt's official priest,
Father Josef Maghs, will hold mass in the 'Niedersachsenhalle' on the fair ground.
This church service has been gaining in popularity in recent years which is
probably due to the special atmosphere it has. On Monday, 18th August 2003,
the traditional horse and cattle market starts at seven in the morning. As well
as the traders who come from near and far,
there are also crowds of onlookers who come to watch the proceedings. Transactions
are still sealed with a handshake, and Vechta Platt, the traditional local dialect,
can still be heard so this is another reason for coming along early on the Monday
morning. Monday is also the day when Vechta's dignitaries hold a reception for
specially invited guests in the Kühling marquee. Tuesday, 19th August 2003
is the last day of the fair and is traditionally 'Family Day' when prices are
reduced at many of the fair's stalls and rides til six o'clock in the evening.
A brilliant firework display takes place at ten in the evening and brings the
fair to a close.
What can you do at the Stoppelmarkt?
The Stoppelmarkt in Vechta means six long days of non-stop fun and enjoyment.
The fair covers an area of 160,000 square metres, and over fivehundred showmen
erect their stands at the fair every year. Among these, there are twenty large
marquees where visitors to the fair can sit and have something to eat and drink
and twenty-four major rides of international standing.Anyone who wants to walk
just once round the
length of the fair will have covered a distance of 6.3 kilometres! In addition,
there are commercial presentations and a gardener's corner which is especially
created for the duration of the Stoppelmarkt. By the way, more than half a million
people come to the Stoppelmarkt each year so you don't want to miss it!

Eines der größten Heimatfeste in der Lüneburger Heide mit Feuerwerk
und Festumzug. Im Innenstadtbereich, mit Märchenspiel und Wahl der Heidekönigin
auf der Freilichtbühne.
Den Glanzpunkt wird der Festzug am Sonntagnachmittag bilden. Eröffnet wird
er von der Rosenkönigin zu Pferde, die von vielen Schmetterlingen begleitet
ins Land zieht. Dann folgen etwa 40 Festwagen mit symbolischen und historischen
Darstellungen, mit allerlei Szenen aus dem Dorfleben der Heide, allerlei Gewerbe,
Handel und Industrie wird gleichfalls auf Festwagen dargestellt.
